The mirabelle plum is the fruit of the mirabelle tree, a variety of plum tree. It is a fruit especially widespread in Lorraine, where it benefits from a PGI and a Label rouge under the name of Mirabelle de Lorraine, and in the north of Alsace (Vosges du Nord and Outre-Forêt), as well as in Haute-Saône, but also present in Quebec. With approximately 15,000 tonnes per year, Lorraine provides approximately 80% of the world's production.

It is a small, round, yellow plum, sometimes covered with a thin, waxy, edible layer called a bloom. It is an excellent palatable fruit, with a more delicate taste than a simple plum. It is eaten when ripe, from mid-August to mid-September.

The mirabelle plum is a fruit that probably originated from a cross between a plum tree and a blackthorn tree in Anatolia and northern Persia. Many legends fix the origin of this fruit in Lorraine, but it probably only appeared there in the Middle Ages as a royal gift. It is first mentioned in documents in February 1569, on the occasion of the visit to Metz of King Charles IX and his mother Catherine de Médicis, the inhabitants offering them mirabelle plums candied in sugar.
