Honey from Provence is protected by a red label associated with a protected geographical indication for both all-flower honey and lavender and lavandin honey.
Since 14 November 2005, the PGI Miel de Provence has been registered in the European directory of PGIs and PDOs. Since that day, the Provence designation for honeys is protected and is reserved for operators who respect the PGI specifications and/or the associated technical reference systems of quality sign.
The order of 30 July 2009 concerning the award of the red label associated with a protected geographical indication for Provence honey was published in the Journal officiel no 0195 of 25 August 2009.
Beekeeping mobilises many producers. They are estimated at 4,500, of which 700 have between 70 and 150 hives. The region has a large number of professional beekeepers: more than 300 beekeepers with over 150 hives. The regional production is 2,000 T/year, i.e. 8% of the national production. Many of them practice transhumance along a route from the coast to Haute-Provence, passing through the Southern Alps. Some of them practice the great transhumance by bringing their hives to the production sectors of acacia, chestnut or fir honeys in the Rhône valley and beyond.
In Provence, the summer is the privileged season for the production of lavender honey and the hives are installed in an area limited to the North by a line Montélimar / Digne with in the South the Ventoux mount, the Albion plateau, the Lure mountain, the Vaucluse mountains and the Luberon massif. In the Alpes de Haute-Provence department, lavender honey is produced in the Banon area and on the Valensole plateau. All-flower honey is produced in a vast area limited by Nîmes, Montélimar, Gap, Digne, Nice, Toulon, Marseille and Avignon8.
But many other honeys are produced by these beekeepers in the garrigue (rosemary and thyme honeys) or in the maquis (heather and arbutus honeys).
