Angelica is a medicinal plant native to Northern Europe. During the Renaissance, doctors called it the "herb of the Holy Spirit" because of its "great and divine properties". Over the centuries, it was used to combat many diseases. Today, angelica is particularly used to relieve digestive disorders, stimulate the appetite and reduce fatigue.
The name angelica comes from the Latin word Angelica, which in turn derives from the Greek Aggelos meaning 'messenger'. Legend has it that a monk heard the archangel Raphael recommend this plant to fight the plague, hence its many names: angelica, archangelica, angel grass or Holy Spirit grass.
Over the centuries, the virtues of angelica have aroused great interest. The plant was used to prevent contagious diseases and to treat many everyday ailments. For example, angelica was used to treat bronchitis, colds, circulation problems, digestive disorders and fatigue.
Angelica is believed to have originated in Northern Europe. It is found particularly in Iceland and Greenland. It can also be found in the wild from Scandinavia to the mountains of Central Europe and Middle Russia.
In France, angelica is not found in the wild but can be cultivated. It is said that the Vikings introduced angelica to Europe because they used the plant as a currency in their trade.
Angelica is an extremely hardy herbaceous plant. It has a large root that supports a very thick and tall stem. The stem is usually between 2 and 3 metres high. The leaves of angelica are also very large, up to 1 metre long.
At the end of the angelica's stem are flowers arranged in an umbel (inverted umbrella shape). The flowers are white to green-yellow in colour. The flowers are followed by small oval, creamy yellow or light brown fruits.
Although the leaves and seeds of angelica can be used in phytotherapy, it is mainly the roots that are valued for their composition of active ingredients. Various formats are available: powder, fluid extract, tincture, etc. Angelica can be used in decoction, infusion and in the formulation of food supplements.
