Blackcurrant syrup is made from fresh blackcurrants and sugar (often cane sugar). It is a syrup with a sweet and sour taste and a blood red colour.
This fruit syrup is an essential ingredient for making kir and is used in many sweet recipes.
Blackcurrant syrup, because of its recipe, is a product rich in carbohydrates. The blackcurrant that makes up the syrup is a berry renowned for its health benefits: it is rich in vitamins, mainly vitamin C and vitamin E, but also in carotenes and numerous antioxidants.
The blackcurrant is a fruit that is harvested in June and July. However, once transformed into blackcurrant syrup, this product can be consumed all year round.
Like all fruit syrups, blackcurrant syrup should be stored at room temperature in a dry place away from light. However, once opened, it is advisable to keep the bottle in the refrigerator door for a maximum of 8 weeks.
Blackcurrant syrup is often consumed as is, as a refreshing drink: it is diluted in a large volume of fresh water, still or sparkling, possibly with ice. It is also often served as a kir, with white wine, sparkling wine or champagne.
